Japanese scientists have discovered the neurons responsible for chocolate and candy addiction in times of stress. A breakthrough that could ultimately help to fight against obesity.
Where does this sudden craving for chocolate and sweets come from when you're under stress? Researchers from the National Institute of Physiological Sciences, located in Japan's Aichi Prefecture, have identified the neurons responsible for these impulses by observing the behavior of mice. According to them, the desire for rodents' carbohydrates would be multiplied by three in times of stress and their consumption of fat decreased by half compared to a normal period.
"Many people who eat too much sweets when they are stressed tend to think it's their fault because they can not control their impulses", while everything happens in the brain, says Yasuhiko Minokoshi, who led the study. This research could prove essential in the fight against obesity. Because if it is not a question of destroying the neurons guilty of such an addiction, the scientist emphasizes that "if we manage to find a particular molecule in the neurons and to target it to suppress a part of its activities, it could allow to reduce the excessive consumption of carbohydrates ". But Yasuhiko Minokoshi remains cautious, stressing that such action requires more time and research.
