Practicing BDSM would improve sexual satisfaction

Compared to non-practitioners, BDSM enthusiasts have fewer sexual problems and are more satisfied with sex, reveals a new study.

French women are the least sexually fulfilled in Europe, according to an IFOP survey published in December. Sexual well-being is strongly related to practices, and not all are equal. According to a study published in February in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, lovers of BDSM (bondage, discipline, sadomasochism) would be more sexual than average.

The BDSM in question

Brought up to date by the film Fifty Shades of grey, BDSM is a sexual practice that is based on domination and submission. Sexual intercourse is a kind of role play of varying duration, based on physical and psychological practices.

No more flourishing for the dominant ones and those who alternate

The study, conducted by Italian researchers, mobilized 266 male and female participants, BDSM practitioners and a control group of 200 people. Each person had to answer questionnaires about their sexual practices and their fulfillment. Researchers first focused on the distribution of roles among BDSM practitioners: men are often dominant and women dominated, although one-third of participants say they alternate roles. It is precisely these, and the dominant ones, who declare the greatest sexual satisfaction in comparison to the dominated and the non-practitioners of BDSM.

Scientists have also realized that going after their fantasies in the field of BDSM allows for greater overall satisfaction and fewer sexual problems.

Better in their heads

In 2013, another group of researchers was interested in these sexual practices. They conducted a comparative study on the psychology of BDSM practitioners. Their findings indicate that they are more extroverted, less neurotic, and generally feel better compared to non-practitioners. As amazing as they may be, these practices are not the consequence of psychological disorders, the scientists conclude.
